Corridors for Conservation in Sri Lanka
In collaboration with the Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT), the Lanka Environment Fund‘s two-year project in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands aimed to establish vital forest corridors. Aligned with WWCT’s goal of preserving ecosystems, the project focused on ensuring the viability of the island’s leopard population and using them as ecological umbrellas.
The project’s success includes the identification of the Western Ridge and Elbedda Forest Corridors, detecting 57 individuals across three ridge areas. Insights from 76 leopard scat samples emphasized the importance of preserving wild prey for coexistence. Notably, the top prey species were the Black-naped Hare, Barking Deer, and Macaque Monkeys.
